THE IDEA IS SIMPLE…
Litter Buddies is a simple initiative for PRIMARY SCHOOLS to encourage families to spend time together outdoors walking and collecting litter. It acts as a stimulus for investigation, conversation and exercise for the whole family and can hopefully lead to long term behavioural changes in the home by encouraging…
- Good recycling habits
- Ideas for easy alternatives to everyday single-use plastics
- Litter to be disposed of properly in bins
- regular outdoor exercise
- family members to spend more time together
The Litter Buddies pack is taken home by one pupil each week for them to do a litter pick/beach clean with a family member/care giver or even the whole family.
The child returns the Litter Buddies kit to school on the following Monday and reports back to their classmates about where they went and what they found. They also complete a Litter Buddies report that can be placed on the school’s Litter Buddies noticeboard.
Each participating child also has the opportunity to sign their name and draw a small picture of something they found during their litter pick on the outside of the Litter Buddies bag. Eventually, the whole of the outside of each bag will be covered with names and drawings leaving a wonderful reminder of the school’s Litter Buddies adventures.

UPCYCLED KIT BAGS
All of our Litter Buddies kit bags and bucket bags are made from old soft vinyl advertising banners.
We’ve created a very simple design that gives these old banners a new lease of life. (We’ve also created templates and ‘How To Guide’ to help volunteers make the bags).
How cool is that?!
WHAT’S IN THE KIT?
Main kit bag made from recycled vinyl advertising banners.
Reusable litter bag made from recycled vinyl advertising banners.
Adult and child litter pickers.
Adult and Child Hi-Vis Vests.
Two pairs of safety gloves.
Activity, Safety and Report sheets.
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
In order to get our Litter Buddies initiative into as many primary schools as possible we need your old soft vinyl advertising banners and sewing skills.
If you are a business, local authority, charity or any other organisation that has old soft vinyl advertising banners you no longer need then please get in touch.
Also, if you’re an individual or part of a sewing/craft group that’s handy with a sewing machine and would like to help us make kit bags then we’d love to hear from you too. (We provide the templates, How To Guide and all materials.)
Let’s work together and create a Litter Buddies network in every primary school across the UK!
